I started this job on Jan 5th of 2010. WOW! The last time I was here was in 2005 and I was way prego with my second child. I was in the classroom then as a para pro and it was my first time ever working with SEBD kids. I went on maternity leave and never looked back.
This year I saw an opening at Hawthorne and decided it was time for me to start contributing financially toward my household and so I applied for an II (intensive interventionist) position. I was hired on Jan 5th and began my unique experience into the world of social emotional behavior disorder kids. YES mam!! Anywhere from Aspergers to Bi-polar. We have kids that have been in and out of mental hospitals to kids that are soo aggressive they have beat up police officers and teachers and are on probation for it.
I actually love my job, don't get me wrong it is hard and at sometimes very emotional, but all in all it is where I truly believe I should be right now. I have a heart for these kids and I enjoy talking with them and getting into their world for a short period of time! This is not where I will be forever as allotments are going down this next year and I am not being offered my job back for the next school year but for now I am here for about 3 more weeks.
The kids that are having issues in class during the day are given referrals and they are sent to one of the 3 Interventionists. Which I am one of. We try and talk them through their issues and get them to apologize to the person that wrote them up and get them back to class to get back on task in a timely manner. This does not always work but for the most part these kids have issues and they just don't know how to affective deal with then in a healthy way.
A lot of these kids have issues at home as well, anywhere from bring homeless some days to being in foster or adopted situations, drugs, sex and more. It is a sad situation and it does affect me emotionally sometimes
One experience that I dealt with a few weeks ago was a child that went out of area, which means he left his classroom, he was walking up and down the hallways and screaming and cursing and tearing things off the hallway walls. The cops were called and he was handcuffed on the floor and was crying and screaming and it just broke my heart. NOW, this kid has serious aggression problems but he is still in 6th grade and it hurt me to see him on the floor crying in hand cuffs.
It's a tough job, but I'm a tough girl and I love what I do! =0)
